Do vaginal probiotics improve vaginal health?

Probiotics are healthy bacteria strains found naturally in some foods and in nutritional supplements. Health experts have found that at least one strain of probiotic could help prevent and treat vaginal imbalance issues like bacterial vaginosis (BV).

What are probiotics?

The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics defines “probiotics” as “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”. Occasionally called good bacteria, probiotics are living microorganisms that are identical to those your body naturally produces

As a result of their beneficial properties, these bacteria prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying in your gut. It is possible to find probiotics in supplements, fermented foods, and yogurts. Vaginal health can be improved through the use of probiotics to balance healthy and harmful bacteria. Infections of the vaginal area and other health issues can result from bacterial imbalances.

Wait so there are different types of probiotics?

Probiotic products commonly contain seven main kinds of microbial organisms: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces, Streptococcus, and Enterococcus, Escherichia, and Bacillus. A strain of probiotics is identified by its specific genus, species, subspecies (if applicable), and alphanumeric strain designation. Most probiotics are aimed at gut health which can help with conditions like IBS and others like Lactobacillus are used for Vaginal health.

So you’re telling me there are probiotics specifically for my vagina?

Your vagina is naturally home to thousands of microorganisms, some of which are “good” bacteria that promote health. In some cases, vaginal probiotics are taken in pill form, while in others, they are suppositories placed in the vagina. Probiotics for vaginal use have been found to be beneficial in certain circumstances according to preliminary studies.

Some of the most popular Probiotics for Vaginal Health

Many probiotic strains are used in vaginal health supplements, but some are more widely used than others.  Some Lactobacillus strains that can help with vaginal health include:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus.
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
  • Lactobacillus gasseri.
  • Lactobacillus crispatus.
  • Lactobacillus jensenii.
  • Lactobacillus reuteri.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

A lot of women find this strain helpful for their vaginal health. It can be used in the prevention and treatment of BV, yeast infections, UTIs, and other vaginal disorders.

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Another common probiotic strain is this one. Vaginal health is improved through the prevention of UTIs, yeast infections, and BV.

Lactobacillus reuteri

The strain is useful in treating BV and yeast infections. Additionally, it helps prevent UTIs.

Why should I take probiotics?

There are several reasons why women should take probiotics for vaginal health:

  • Treatment and prevention of vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections.
  • Keeping your vagina balanced between beneficial and harmful bacteria.
  • A remedy for both vaginal infections and other problems.

Probiotics may be prescribed  for two main reasons:

Bacterial Yeast Infection

Your vagina regularly coexist with microbes, including Candida (a fungus). In yeast infections, candida multiplies so quickly that it overpowers healthy bacteria. The most common symptoms are itching and a discharge resembling cottage cheese.

Bacterial Vaginosis

A number of harmful bacteria flourish in this environment, outnumbering healthy bacteria like lactobacillus. Especially after your period or after sex, you might notice a fishy smell and grayish-green discharge. The cause of BV is unknown to scientists. Women of childbearing age are most likely to contract this infection.

In some people, BV may clear up on its own. Other people may require antibiotics. Lactobacillus crispatus, for example, has been proven to help treat and even prevent BV.
