A Guide to Chin Surgery

Sometimes, little things make all the difference. Being unhappy with your chin, whether it’s its size, fullness, length or definition, can make you really uncomfortable with your entire face. A chin that’s slightly crooked, too short or that has no sharpness and creates a “double chin” effect with the neck can disrupt your entire look.

For those who’d like to change their chin, we have great news: you don’t need a full facelift in order to fix that small area of your face. Our surgeons shared with us how a simple procedure that fixes a small area can make a huge difference.

A Guide to Chin Surgery

Chin surgery is performed to reshape the chin, its profile, projection, and transition with the neck. There are two main reasons patients come to us for chin surgery. The first is to disappear a double chin and the second is to modify the size of the chin, either enlarge it or decrease its profile.

Making double chins a thing of the past

Chin surgery in the majority of the cases is performed to get rid of the dreaded double chin. Surgeons can use different techniques, depending on the patient and his or her aesthetic goals. By removing the double chin, the patient’s face looks instantly slimmer and more attractive, providing balance to the entire face.

The first thing you should know is that there is not a standard “double chin surgery” that can help everyone, rather a combination of surgical procedures that can dissolve unwanted fat in the area and remove or tighten loose skin. The most popular techniques to correct a double chin are:

  • Liposuction of the chin and upper neck. Sometimes, the problem area is just due to stubborn fat. By performing liposuction in the area, your surgeon can sculpt your chin and the upper region of your neck.
  • Neck lift surgery. More complex cases might benefit the most from neck lift surgery. The surgeon will remove excess skin from the neck and contour the entire area, including the chin.
  • Submentoplasty. If you need a little extra after having liposuction of the chin, your surgeon might perform a submentoplasty. This surgery begins with chin liposuction and if needed, the surgeon will create tiny incisions under the chin to tighten the skin and muscles.

Creating a chin that harmonizes your entire face

On the other hand, some people are unhappy with the size of their chin and its proportion to the rest of their face. In these cases, there are also different options depending on what you’re looking for.

  • Chin implants. If you want a larger chin, more projection to improve your profile or a slight reshaping, implants can be the best choice. Implants come in different shapes and sizes, so your surgeon will choose the one that aligns with your aesthetic goals.
  • Chin reduction. Some patients feel like their chin is too large, pointy or long. If this is the case, your surgeon can perform a mentoplasty. During this procedure, the doctor shaves and removes part of the bone tissue in order to achieve a more balanced profile.
  • Chin fat transfer. For patients interested in enlarging their chins a little bit, a fat transfer might give the chin tissue the tone it needs. After performing liposuction in a small area of the body, the surgeon purifies and injects the fat in order to fill and shape the chin.
