Facelift for men: how to do it right

Find an experienced plastic surgeon. When you want to get plastic surgery, whether it’s a facelift or something else, your first step should always be finding the right doctor. Don’t go with a doctor who is not a plastic surgeon, ever! For a facelift, make sure you go to a doctor with experience in facial rejuvenation surgeries. Dr. Quiroz, VIDA’s expert in facial rejuvenation tells us, “A lot of people don’t know how to pick a plastic surgeon. They sometimes even go to people who are not even surgeons. It’s important to make sure you verify your surgeon’s experience and credentials.”

Ask your surgeon about his or her specific experience. Are you going to a plastic surgeon that specializes in facial rejuvenation procedures? You need to know that the doctor has ample experience in the specific procedure you want. Plastic and cosmetic surgery are very complex, which is why there are surgeons with areas of expertise. In order to get the best, most natural results, go with an expert.

Put your health and safety first.

Apart from knowing you are going to see a licensed plastic surgeon, you also need to research the hospital or clinic where you are getting your facelift. This really goes hand in hand with going to a trustworthy doctor: is the clinic clean? Is it safe and does it comply with national and international standards? If you want to be extra safe, choose a clinic that has been accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), an organization that makes sure clinics adhere (or exceed) the highest standards in medical care.

Know when you’re ready for a Facelift.

Is there a definitive list that tells you that you’d be the ideal candidate for a facelift? Not really. There are certain factors, of course, but as Dr. Quiroz points out “There isn’t a certain age or definitive amount of signs of aging that will instantly determine when a patient is ready for a facelift. What patients want is to look better,” Dr. Quiroz says, adding “Most of my male patients come to see me when they simply don’t feel happy with how they look. Perhaps they look older than what they actually are, maybe they are seeing too many wrinkles or are hearing too many comments on how tired they look. At the end of the day, a facelift will make you look and feel better.”

Understand how facelifts for men are different.

Although a facelift will always achieve a younger look, when performed in men, things are different. “Surgeons know that there are details that have to be precisely adapted for men,” says Dr. Quiroz. “When I perform a male facelift, I have to be extra aware of the stigmas surrounding male plastic surgery, in order to achieve the most natural results possible.”

Plan your surgery.

When you go into your first consultation, expect to talk to your surgeon about everything: from the look you want to your overall health. “In order to achieve the best results with a male facelift, as a surgeon, I need to evaluate and do a complete assessment of my patient,” comments Dr. Quiroz. Some of the things your surgeon will evaluate are your skin, your bone structure, and how the different areas of your face have aged. “A good surgeon will do a complete assessment before planning your surgery,” concludes Dr. Quiroz.

Go over questions, doubts, and expectations.

A facelift is the only procedure that will effectively remove years off your face. It’s normal to feel anxious about the end result and how life is going to look like after surgery. Some of the questions we get at VIDA include:

Will I look ‘overstretched’? Answer: No. You will look like yourself, but younger and well rested.
Will I look feminine? Answer: Again, no. A male facelift will preserve all of your masculine features.
Will my facial hair change? Will my beard grow back uneven? Answer: When you go to a surgeon with experience in male plastic surgery, your facial hair will remain untouched. Surgeons know that they must take your facial hair into consideration when tightening and removing skin.
