Facelift and Neck Lift Surgery
When you see yourself in the mirror, are you disappointed with the visible signs of facial aging in your reflection? Do you have horizontal bands across your neck or sagging skin under your chin that resembles a “turkey wattle” or jowls? If so, you might benefit from undergoing facelift and neck lift surgery with VIDA Wellness and Beauty in Tijuana. Our board-certified plastic surgeons are experts at combating noticeable signs of aging throughout the face and neck while delivering natural-looking results.
When to Get a Facelift and/or Neck Lift
Over time, the body slowly halts the production of two proteins that are essential to maintaining healthy, elastic skin: collagen and elastin. Without these proteins, the skin starts to sag. Fat is displaced. Muscle tone declines. These developments cause visible signs of aging to appear throughout the face and neck areas.
In addition, environmental factors such as frequent exposure to pollution, lifestyle choices such as smoking and certain hereditary traits can accelerate the aging process.
If you are experiencing the bothersome aesthetic effects of the natural aging process — wrinkles, deep furrows, severe facial folds, jowls, sagging skin throughout the neck area or hollow pockets throughout the face — it might be time to pursue facial rejuvenation surgery.
Facelift and neck lift surgery are often performed together, under general anesthesia or “twilight sedation.” Although facial rejuvenation surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis, we recommend that out-of-town visitors recover at VIDA Wellness and Beauty’s relaxing recovery boutique, so we can provide 24-hour nursing care.
The exact surgical approach to facelift surgery, including the type of incisions, varies by patient. During consultation, your experienced plastic surgeon evaluates your facial structure and reviews your aesthetic concerns before suggesting an appropriate treatment protocol.
The traditional approach to facelift surgery involves making an incision on both sides of the face, starting at the temple and extending downward toward the ear, terminating either behind the ear or in the scalp region. Once your plastic surgeon has made the incisions, he carefully lifts a skin flap, so he can repair the supporting tissue structures and musculature. The surgeon re-distributes any displaced fat. He pulls the residual skin taut and excises the excess skin before closing the incisions with the technique that best conceals the incision sites.
There are two approaches to neck lift surgery: platysmaplasty (used to repair or remove neck muscles) and cervicoplasty (used to remove excess skin). With platysmaplasty, the surgeon positions the incisions under the chin and behind the ears. Cervicoplasty may require a different incision approach. Your surgeon will discuss both options with you during consultation.
Once your plastic surgeon has made the incisions, he excises excess skin and repairs (or removes) the neck musculature, as needed. He may also perform liposuction in the treatment area to eliminate unwanted fat. Finally, he closes the incisions with sutures.
Note: Your surgeon might recommend BOTOX injections either in conjunction with neck lift surgery or in lieu of it to relax the neck muscles that are contributing to the appearance of the horizontal neck bands.
Recovering From Facelift and / or Neck Lift
The recovery period for facial rejuvenation surgery is generally about two weeks. Many postoperative symptoms subside within one week, but it typically takes closer to two weeks for all visible symptoms to become less noticeable.
During the first few days after surgery, you must keep your head elevated at all times. You might notice mild discomfort throughout the treatment area, but taking oral pain medication as instructed by your surgeon will help alleviate this. You might also notice that the treatment area is swollen or bruised, but these are normal symptoms that will subside, again, in about a week.
