The 3 Types Of Labiaplasty Methods: Everything You Should Know

Most of us know that labiaplasty is a type of cosmetic surgical procedure that gets carried out on the vulva.

The reason why such vaginal surgery gets done is to correct the size or shape of the labia minora (inner labia).

But what you may not know is that there are three different types of labiaplasty procedures that can get carried out.

Are you thinking of having labiaplasty surgery soon? If so, this article will provide you with more information on those three surgical methods/options.

Method 1: The “Trim” Technique

The simplest of the three methods is the trim technique.

labiaplasty trim technique

It begins with the surgeon making a small vertical incision along the length of the labia minor.

They will do this using either a scalpel or a laser.

Once the incision gets made, the surgeon will then remove any excess vaginal tissue in that area. At the end of the procedure, the surgeon will close the area with stitches.

Method 2: The “Wedge” Technique

The wedge technique involves removing tissue from the center of the inner labia.

The surgeon will cut and remove a partial amount of tissue from the thickest part of the inner labia.

Once that gets carried out, the two detached sides will then get stitched back together.

Biggest benefit: There is less visible scarring with the wedge technique;

Method 3: The “De-epithelialization” Technique

The de-epithelialization technique is the removal of tissue lining the labia.

The de-epithelialization technique is a procedure that first became mainstream in 2000. Today, it has proven to be just as popular as the previous two methods.

Surgery for the de-epithelialization technique involves extracting some inner labia tissue lining and closing the area with stitches.

The de-epithelialization method is similar to the trim technique. The main difference is that inner labia tissue gets removed, rather than the outer edge.

It “shrinks” the labia,

What can labiaplasty achieve for you and your body?

There is no denying that each woman’s labia is unique to their body. The labia minora and labia majora come in a range of different shapes and sizes.

There are many reasons why a woman might have an enlarged labia.

Some women may have had a small labia but noticed that it got enlarged after childbirth or due to the effects of aging. Others may have been born with an enlarged labia.

While some women feel their labia is perfectly normal, others may feel self-conscious about its size.

Labiaplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery that aims to do several things for patients:

  • Restore self-confidence, particularly in public when wearing tight undergarments or swimwear;
  • Reduce pain and discomfort when exercising, wearing specific garments, or having sex;
  • Reduce excess tissue that causes the inner labia to “hang down” below the level of the outer labia;
  • Correct the look of an asymmetrical labia and improve its appearance.

Labiaplasty offers patients many physical benefits. But, it boasts many psychological benefits too.

If you’ve been struggling with your labia in silence for an extended period, now’s the time to put things right and feel more confident.

Post-surgery: looking after your labia

Regardless of the labiaplasty method done, you must take it easy after the surgery.

As with any physical surgery, there will be some slight pain and discomfort at first. Here are some steps on how you can have a restful recovery:

  • Get a family member or friend to drive you home immediately after surgery;
  • You can carry out your household activities as usual, but don’t “over-do” things;
  • Ask family members and friends to help look after your kids and pets for a few days;
  • Avoid smoking as much as possible for the first six weeks after your procedure;
  • Be sure to drink plenty of water so that you can stay hydrated.

You should also have plenty of sanitary towels to hand, as you may experience some bleeding for the first few days after your labiaplasty surgery.
