Why Individuals Pursue Liposuction Surgery
Sometimes, diet and exercise are not enough to get rid of localized deposits of fat. When this is the case, individuals often pursue liposuction. It is an effective way to remove fat from almost any area of the body, including the knees, thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, back, chest, upper arms, neck and chin.
When Liposuction Is Not an Appropriate Treatment Option
It is important to note that although liposuction is the ultimate tool for body contouring, it is not designed as a tool for major weight loss. Although the fat cells removed with liposuction will not grow back, substantial weight gain (i.e., gaining about 10 percent of your bodyweight) can cause any remaining fat cells to grow bigger or new fat cells to develop, both in the treated area and in other areas of the body. For this reason, patients are encouraged to be close to a bodyweight that they feel they can maintain after surgery. Also, liposuction cannot improve the tone or look of inelastic, sagging skin. Patients with excess skin and / or poor skin quality may be more suitable candidates for a body contouring procedure such as tummy tuck or arm lift.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction is normally an outpatient procedure, but patients may elect to recover in our comfortable recovery boutique. Liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia, but patients undergoing liposuction on a small-volume area may opt for local anesthesia with IV sedation.
Before starting the procedure, the plastic surgeon typically injects a tumescent solution into the area to be treated. The solution is comprised of lidocaine, an anesthetic, epinephrine and sterile saltwater. Together, the solution causes the treatment area to swell to minimize bleeding and bruising and facilitate fat removal.
The surgeon makes several small incisions in the treatment area. These incisions are so small they do not usually need stitches to close them. He then inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula through the incisions and suctions out the unwanted fat.
There are several liposuction techniques that can be used to facilitate the removal of fat, including power-assisted liposuction (PAL), ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) and laser liposuction, the least invasive liposuction treatment option. During consultation, your surgeon discusses these options with you to help you make an informed decision about which treatment protocol is right for your unique anatomy and surgical goals.
Recovering From Liposuction
Patients recovering from liposuction should plan to take about five to seven days off from work or their everyday routine, getting plenty of rest and avoiding vigorous activity during this time. The treated area may be numb or tender during the first few days of recovery, but patients can take oral pain medication as directed by the plastic surgeon to alleviate any uncomfortable symptoms. Individuals should wear a compression garment over the treated area until they are instructed otherwise. During their follow-up appointments, the plastic surgeon will provide additional care instructions and will let you know when it is safe to resume normal activities.
